Review: Goners #5

Josiah is part demon, his “mother” wears the face of Mama Latimer, and it’s time for a showdown. While Josiah and Zoe are held inside the manor, Francis and the rest of the Latimer defenders gather outside, as do a reporter and her cameraman, which is pretty spot on. Anything for a story, and that includes being ripped apart by Wargs, eh? Josiah now knows the truth about his “birth,” and they’re face-to-face with his “mother.”

Goners-#5-2-18-15Josiah is forced to take a trip down memory lane, that of George, a member of the Roanoke colony (yes, that one) and apparently the reason all the settlers went missing without a trace. George can control the effects of the Grimoire, which can “build reality” so that’s just super, and which will allow the demon Ammon to rise through Josiah.

We end with Josiah as the big giant demon creature, the “mother” urging him to kill Zoe, and Zoe begging Josiah to fight the demon influence in his mind. It’s a cliffhanger; Josiah-Ammon stabs someone, but we’ll have to wait to find out who.

I loved the art in this issue, particularly for the “mother” and the dramatic scenes at the end once Josiah had become Ammon. This story has been all over the place, with flashbacks and backstory and action and gore. I myself love action and gore, but found the flashbacks and backstory overwhelming at times.

Overall I’ve enjoyed this series well enough, but this issue in particular stood out. It was urgent, it was emotional, and it had just the right amount of drama.

Score: 3/5
