Review: B.P.R.D. #112

Written by Guest Contributor: Jordan North BPRD continues to play out more and more like a series of crescendos, big heavy moments. Something I think is working brilliantly for the series. Instead of a monster movie this seems to be getting in stride with something far more essential; its soul. Reminding us that there is more to it than just the macabre.

There’s a finding-oneself story of Liz Sherman who faces the most daunting demon of all… herself. There’s a pure evil Nazi of god villain in the nefarious Dr. Clyburn. And the tale of Fenix and her Rottweiler pal living at the edge of a commune in what are the Mad Maxian end days.

It’s this newfound world scope that’s doing so much for the series (granted I started it about ten issues back) it’s quickly become a must read for me. That’s not to say it’s without its flaws. Particularly a weirdly off-putting tendency for artist Tyler Crook to draw all people like they’re somehow related in a weird, moonfaced, Deliverance type way. That being said it’s also not the Breaking Bad of comics, but BPRD offers a wide and damn well put together smorgasbord that leaves you wanting more. Some moments like Liz dealing with what felt like real metaphysical revaluations was particularly decadent.

This is a real good, real fun and (in most ways) real pretty book and a damn fine comic. Read it.
