First off, let me just say that I have really enjoyed this series for the past few months. And it’s a pretty simple reason as to why that is; I love the dialogue. Dialogue is the backbone of a good comic book series, or any kind of series for that matter. I’m impressed more and more by the conversation in this series as it continues. Unfortunately, more than half of this issue is without any real dialogue that advances the story. There is still story, it’s just being told visually rather than literally. I’ve always liked the art in this book, but I really like to read. There wasn’t enough reading going on in my opinion. Now if the series was poor, I would be happy that there was less crappy dialogue to weed through, but I am interested in what these characters have to say. Now keep in mind, that sometimes you have to tell a story without words, and this issue does it well, considering the events that take place on the pages, but still. I hope that you get my point. Because I’m going to start rambling soon if I don’t move on. Regardless, IDW and Darby Pop deliver a solid issue, but I’m expecting a little more from the team next month. Plus, some pretty cool news about a new creator jumping onto the book. I won’t spoil it for you, but I guarantee that you’ll be onboard. So yeah, explosions! At the end of the last issue, I was pretty shocked. I was pretty terrified thinking about how Greg was going to handle an actual situation with baddies. So he’s just chilling with his girl, and all of a sudden the boardwalk goes up in flames. Luckily for our unfortunate hero, real superheroes show up. Phew, I didn’t know what was going to happen. This issue definitely has a lot of action, regardless if it lacks in my favorite area of storytelling. And I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but heroic actions bring with them a ton of risk, and we get to see proof of that in spades. A hero is lost, and a team’s morale is broken. And of course Greg’s life isn’t getting easier. Just when it looks like his family might actually appreciate him, his relationship may just be falling apart. It just never ends with this guy.
Jeff Kline and Christopher Johnson do a fine job this month. Kline writes some solid dialogue even if it’s in short supply, and Johnson does a good job with a pretty groovy underwater fight scene. Definitely what stood out the most about this issue.
I could be worrying a little prematurely, but I am afraid that this series is running out of gas. It kind of feels like everything is winding down. Of course, the way that this issue ends, I could see it picking back up, but I just have this weird feeling. I always get this way when I read comics with very little dialogue. But also, the addition of some new blood could be exactly what this series needs. And also my paranoia may just be getting the best of me. We’ll see.
