7 Must-Read Wonder Woman Comics for Fans
At one point, we were all convinced DC was never going to see real success with their superhero and comic movies. Marvel was hitting homerun after homerun and DC was left in the dark. Sure, they may have been selling tickets, but that was because dedicated fans were prepared to offer them chance after chance. Then Wonder Woman came along and changed everything.
Women everywhere rejoiced at having a female super hero kick so much behind, and men were happy to finally see DC produce a fantastic movie. For a lot of people, though, their love of this Amazonian superhero has been reignited. Now, they just can’t get enough of her and are looking for the best comics to read. Here are the ones you have to read.
1. The Golden Age Omnibus
Everyone has an origin story, so maybe it’s time you got to know hers. You will soon find these strange comics are super weird but incredibly charming. It’s a collection of her early appearances in William Moulton Marston’s work 75 years ago and the perfect place to start for those looking to go way back.
Warning: they are a tad outdated and probably (more than a little) sexist, however, in those days they were way ahead of their time and this was Marston’s attempt to create a new kind of hero. Any fan who hasn’t read these should because it offers a clear view of the origin story and provides insight to how the character was conceived and portrayed at the start of her journey.
2. Spirit of Truth
It might only be 64 pages, but it’s 64 pages of (almost) perfection. The writer, Paul Dini, is probably better known for his work on the Batman cartoons, but he’s still a comic writer (and a great one at that) and he created a series (with Alex Ross) on each member of the Justice League. Diana’s edition doesn’t put the focus on villains, rather revolves around Diana’s struggle to find her place in the world.
3. The Hiketeia
This masterpiece came from Greg Rucka, so if you see any Wonder Woman comic with his name attached to it, it will be well worth your time. This particular piece, however, stands out and was the start of his run with the character. In this story, a woman (Danielle) seeks Wonder Woman out for help, but there’s a complication: Batman. Danielle has drawn Batman’s ire after killing sex traffickers who murdered her sister. Strap yourself in for the resulting story, which is akin to a Greek tragedy.
4. Blood
The artwork is truly incredible and the character is fascinating, but this is one of the more controversial entries. Expect to see Diana the warrior, much like the movie, but do know the Amazonian sisters don’t come out looking good. There is a debated take on their society and how it has been built, but it’s definitely worth a look, especially if you were taken by the movie creation of the hero.
5. A League of One
This isn’t strictly a Wonder Woman comic, this one is from the Justice League run; however, the spotlight is very much on Diana here. She receives a vision which can only be described as disturbing and must travel her journey alone. She is met by what appears to be an unbeatable foe, but she overcomes it alone and kicks the crap out of the other Justice League members while she’s at it. It’s an epic battle that shows her strength, resolve, and her love for her allies (because yes, she only beats the snot out of them to protect them for their untimely demise as laid out in her vision).
6. The Wonder Woman Chronicles
This is the complete collection of comics that Wonder Woman has featured in, in one easy place. The problem with many of the earlier works is they are no longer printed or impossible to find. So, here you have everything you need in one epic account. There are three volumes and they are the perfect gift for any Wonder Woman lover, whether that’s you or you just want to introduce a loved one to the goodness of Diana.
7. The True Amazon
This is a more recent release and while it does focus on Diana’s origin story it comes from a different angle. This tale from Jill Thompson reimagines the super hero in her youth, not as the compassionate super hero we have come to know, rather as an arrogant, strong headed woman just starting her journey to greatness. Not everyone is born with humility, sometimes it’s one of those traits that is learned over a lifetime of challenges.
