Yeah… yeah… just let that sink in a bit. A DC title made it on our “Best of 2016” list. That’s the type of year it’s been, right? The term “90s comic” gets thrown around like it’s a bad thing. Sure, the overall era had some pretty bad shit, but how is that any different from the rest of decades that turned out comics? It’s not. I bring this up because Deathstroke is a 90s-feeling comic in the best possible way, but without feeling too heavily dated in its story and presentation.

That’s the key thing here, entertaining, over the top stories, great art, broad narrative… but with this oh so slight modern feel to it. Remember Oh, Killstrike or whatever that turd was called? How it wanted to capture the 90s tone and just did everything wrong? Or X-Men 92 which was written through the haze of nostalgia and rode the coattails of Jim Lee’s designs? Deathstroke has a complex narrative, deep character development and even featured Deathstroke fighting Superman… what the fuck else do you need? Nothing.
