Best of 2016: Henchgirl

By Dustin Cabeal

Are you tired of me talking about Henchgirl yet? I hope not because it’s going to be a TV show one day and I’m cool with that. This series… this is how you do an indie superhero title. I’m just going to flat out say it that way. There’s no homage in this title, but Kristen Gudsnuk displays a masterful understanding of the superhero genre and humor. By far, Henchgirl is the funniest comic I’ve read all year.

Since it concluded this year, you can either track down all the issues (something I recently did) or wait for the collected trade coming next year from Dark Horse. Just do yourself a favor and read this series, especially if you like superheroes.

Before I end this, I have to say that I love Gudsnuk’s artwork on this series. The range of styles, the emotion, the physical comedy, the energy that she brings to the page is just incredible. Whatever her next project it, I will be there. With bells on because that’s a thing we still say in 2016.
