I’ve been a huge Pendleton Ward fan ever since The Misadventures of Flapjack on Cartoon Network, everything he has done has been a gift from the animation gods. Pendleton Ward is everything good in life. You can betcha lumpin buns that Adventure Time:The Flip Side will only bring joy to your calloused heart. So I will try to contain my excitement in this review as I am sitting here wide-eyed rocking back and forth in my seat. Since this is the first issue of The Flip Side series, the writers, Paul Tobin and Colleen Coover kind of just set up the story for upcoming issues; I think this could be considered more of a #0 issue. The issue begins with our heroes Finn, Jake and BMO finding themselves in need of some questing but all they can seem to conjure up is menial tasks like helping Ice King open a jar. Classic Ice King. But they find a gem of a quest when they stumble upon a posting on the backside of the bulletin wall.
Their new adventure begins with adventurer testing and training like, of course, eating ice cream and well eating more ice cream. Hey, heroes gotta do what heroes gotta do. I want to mention that the flipping of Ooo doesn’t really happen in this issue but more of informing the reader that some flippy “bunk junk” is gonna start happening in maybe the next issue. So, I’m probably going to be adding this one to my pull list.
Maybe I am a bit biased but what the hell; I loved every bit of this comic. This issue was lighthearted and humorous. Finn and Jake were just as optimistic as always and having BMO in this series is just an added plus. I loved the illustration style by Wook Jin Clark, it is a little different from other Adventure Time comics but doesn’t fall short. So, you go Glen Coco. I have read other spins off of Adventure Time such as Candy Capers and Marceline and The Scream Queens which I really enjoyed; so Flip Side does have a lot to live up to but I am really excited for how the series pans out.
