First adventures are always continuations of the past, whether you see it or not. You think the Super Sons are finished after their last series, and yet here is another new number one. The story is far from over, as it is in both comics and life. There are so many great things on the horizon and the series takes place before them, it takes place in the past as that is what is needed for the future of the series. This takes place before Bendis’ Superman run and doing so ensures one last adventure before the series, and Superboy’s life is forever turned upside down. Superboy is young and has so much promise and adventures ahead of him; boy is in his name, which implies one day he will be a man. Before Superboy grows up, he has to go through what being a boy means. There is one great tale left for him before his life is forever changed and his next chapter comes.
The writing is great, it is both humorous and moving at the same time. It is about friendship and teamwork, which is not always the easiest for either. The relationship between the two boys is once against highlighted. One boy is perfect for a team, the other may be more solo, but is more team oriented. The team-up works and may not seem like when Bendis’ Superboy returns that he will not still be with Robin, but the story tells that the two will always be best friends and are the perfect foils for one another. The pacing is consistent throughout and full of what makes the Super Sons work, full of variety in tone, that when put together makes the title great.
The artwork looks nice and colorful throughout. Sure, some character designs may have looked identical, but every character looked distinct. Superman and Batman were absent, as they were in several previous issues of the previous issues, and that helped put the art over the ‘children’ distinct from what came before. This artwork is not only strong with various designs and heart but shows so much promise for the future. As some artists keep getting stronger with each issue after, and though not saying this will happen, it shows promise enough. It is not just the artist, but the whole team of colorists and letterers as well. Everyone together is what makes the issue as strong as it is, and if they do improve with each issue for this new beginning there is no telling how strong the further issues will be when it already has started so strong.
Super Sons is about the next generation of the iconic heroes. Their last series ended to make way for a new one, though it has to be told in the past to make sure all the loose ends are tied up before soaring to new beginnings. These characters and the title prove that the best has yet to come. It is too soon to truly know, but all signs for this issue prove that is true. All the little elements, no matter how diverse, come together for such a strong title. It is a mixture of so many different people that excel, but they will all work on new titles when this is over, so it is important to enjoy their hard work on this title and enjoy such a wonderful issue, as said, full of humor and heart. As good as it is, there is still room for improvement, but it is on the right track. Super Sons #16 may have seemed an ending, but Adventure of the Super Sons proves that ending was just the beginning.
