Review: Aquaman/Jabberjaw Special #1
By Garrett Hanneken
Aquaman Jabberjaw Special #1 plays its homage to both storylines in a fun and heartwarming tale, but the issue references a horror movie that started the comic out wonderfully.
That reference that I speak of is none other than Jaws. On a side note, Aquaman and Jaws should have their own Special because this comic got me enthusiastic to read such a thing (it needs to happen). Anyways, this issue is about setting aside our differences and learning to live in peace with one another. A simple and repeated message, but this issue does it with cause and, most importantly, laughs.
That being said, the Special exceeds with its humor. This comes with the interaction between Aquaman and Jabberjaw and the issue’s self-awareness that Aquaman gets no respect, even though Jabberjaw is such a huge fan. The two characters gel together so well that by the end of the issue you hope to see them interact with one another in the future.
As for the plot, it involves a simple time traveling plan to change the future. Although it isn’t unique, simplicity should be expected from these DC specials. On the plus side, the issue handles its generic bad guy routine with a humorous villain that provided some laughs along with the two titular characters.
Not only does the issue work on laughs, but there is a bit of action to make this comic feel more than just a gag. The artwork definitely fits the tone of a light-hearted cartoon but stands out when dangers afoot. This comes into play with the display of vicious sharks and Aquaman fighting in style like an Adam West Batman.
Aquaman Jabberjaw Special #1 is a fun and pleasing issue with a decent bonus story about heroism. The Special’s message of desegregation is simple, but it shines with adding humor and compassion.
Score:4/5
