Review: Army of Darkness: Furious Road #2
Army of Darkness: Furious Road continues with an action packed second issue. This issue picks up right where the last issue left off with our near elderly hero now in the clutches of a group of survivors of the deadite virus. In this future the virus has wiped out most of humanity. Eventually Ash and these deadite hunters find common ground and decide to work together against the zombie threat which is being led by a familiar foe.
Like with the first issue there is the classic Ash wit and humor that I love and it plays well against this new group of characters. In this issue we learn a little bit more about the survivors specifically how the humans joined forces with the creatures of the supernatural. One supernatural member of the group is Eva whom we find out in this issue is the daughter of Dracula. Dracula himself makes several appearances here along with his vampire brides and I thought his character added an interesting layer to the story. There’s some father/daughter tension between Dracula and Eva that I’m interested to see develop. I like that the book uses short flashbacks but doesn’t take too much time away from the main story.
There’s a significant amount of your classic Evil Dead gore. Not as much as I wanted. When I think of the Evil Dead I think of Bruce Campbell being soaked in zombie guts. If you’re a fan like me than any less is unacceptable. Artist Kewber Baal does a great job of balancing layered background scenery with busy action scenes. There’s a lot to pay attention to but it’s all laid out in a way that’s easy to follow.
This issue gave me more of what was great in the first issue: goofball humor and campy horror. Nancy A. Collins has so far penned an interesting that tale that ended with me caring even more about these new characters. It’s hard to imagine a world where Ash has lost the world to his enemies but the story being told in this new installment of Army of Darkness is still enjoyable to read for old fans and new fans alike.
