Review: Carpe Diem Vol. 1 – I Hate Mondays

As a site we’ve already talked a lot about Carpe Diem from Atomeka and Titan Comics. Originally we saw it appear in A-1, which was an anthology containing Carpe Diem, The Weirding Willows and Odyssey. I’ve fallen behind on the hardcovers for the latter two series, but I couldn’t miss another opportunity to talk about Carpe Diem. The story collects the A-1 series so if you read those tales then you already know what to expect. If you didn’t then expect some great action, humor (dark humor that is) and fantastic art.

The story follows a group of heroes that each have a moniker that follows a day of the week like: Sir Tuesday, Sir Wednesday and so forth. The leader of the group is Sir 8th Day who has an 8-Ball for a head and his assistant Jude… a talking Koala Bear. Each member of the team has an additional name that essentially tells the reader what they’re role on the team is like: The Shaman, The Muscle, The Assassin and other bad-ass titles.

A1_Presents_CARPE_DIEm_cover.jpg.size-600They fight villains that would destroy the planet, enslave the planet and or unleash giant monsters… on the planet. The catch is that Sir Monday always dies. They make mention of this in the very first story, but you never know when the poor sod is going to die. Well you kind of do, but I’m not telling you the formula.

The stories are simple, but they’re so quick and humorous that you won’t really notice or care. I mean the point of them isn’t to do some deep character study, but to just have an action packed adventure that makes you laugh and entertains the shit out of you. In that regard writer W.H. Rauf is very successful.

As for the artwork, it’s fucking wonderful. Artist Rhoald Marcellius has a wonderful style that looks more like a cartoon than a comic book. Part of that comes from colorist Sakti Yuwono’s coloring being so incredible. There’s something about the artwork that is pure and enjoyable. Marcellius delivers the action in a big way, but then also supports the humor of the story. Granted most of it is dark humor, but it’s still spot on… and very funny.

If you are looking for action, over the top violence, humor and above all… to be entertained then look no further than Carpe Diem. I just hope that we see the second volume because this refresher on the series only made me want to read more.
