Review: Chew #50
This is a momentous issue, number 50 of a projected 60 issue series. With only two more arcs to go you know the story is going to accelerate pretty quickly. In most comics and magazines, certain issue numbers hold special meaning, the first time it hits fifty and every multiple of one hundred. Even if you haven't read any of the previous issues you can pick up one of these special numbered ones and know that you're in for a treat. Chew issue 50 does not disappoint. Because each arc is exactly five issues long, this issue is the finale of the tenth story arc. The point I'm laboring to make is that this issue is perfectly poised for some major shit to go down. And go down it does. This issue contains the fight that anyone who’s been reading regularly has wanted to see. With this much build up to a particular confrontation, it can only go one of two ways. Super-awesome or super-lame, but this is John Layman and Rob Guillory we're talking about. There was never any doubt in my mind that this was going to be awesome and I'm glad to see I wasn't wrong.
Everything you love about Chew is in there as always; background sight gags, excellent artwork, layering things in for later and the most food-related-superpowers in any issue to date. All this with the backdrop of Tony and The Collector beating the stuffing out of each other. Rob Guillory really gets to flex those action drawing muscles, every panel is dynamic and intense.
Chew issue 50 still manages to make you laugh constantly while throwing in things that tug at the heart-strings. If I was to make the analogy that Chew is a vacation, then this arc is the day at the water-park. You return home happy and exhausted then as you sit there with a cup of tea, you realize that you only have two more days before it is over, you know that tomorrow you will wake up and make it an even better day, but for that night an immense sadness washes over you.
