Review: Cyrus Perkins and the Haunted Taxi Cab #4

This is how you end a mini-series. With a rewarding conclusion, but an interesting setup for the next volume. That’s right, there’s going to be a second volume of Cyrus Perkins and you can color me interested! I never like to say too much about the conclusion of a story. Cyrus is being held at gun point by Mitch. Between Mitch and Michael, we learn what happened and it’s… well it’s a strange and messed up story. I agreed with Cyrus about everything and I absolutely loved the ending. It was fitting. It was overly cheerful, but it came full circle and left Cyrus in a good spot in his character development.

Cyrus Perkins #4Dave Dwonch’s story arc has been masterful. I mean that. This story was perfectly mapped out from beginning to end while the third issue dipped a little, it was only so that the fourth issue had a greater impact. Which is perfect again. I can’t recall how many mini-series I’ve read in which the big reveal happens in the third issue and the fourth issue is just clean up. Dwonch made each issue worth reading on its own and put together a standalone story that was rewarding from beginning to end.

Anna Lencioni deserves as much credit with her artwork. The art and layout have been a huge part of the presentation. There’s a scene in particular that was amazing. I won’t spoil it, but it was intense. Lencioni really places the reader in the shoes of our college students that have bit off more than they can chew. She’s brought this world to life and I give her huge props for illustrating cars that look realistic and never break prospective. That and she illustrates several cab scenes which are actually interesting to look at. Much like film, car scenes aren’t the most interesting thing to look at visually, but Lencioni switched it up so it was never dull being in the cab.

I’m gald to see that this series will continue. It’s going to be a while, but that’s fine. I would much rather have a sequel that’s as strong as this first volume. Whatever is in store for Cyrus Perkins next, I want to be a part of it. If you missed the single issues, then it’s worth checking out the trade and enjoying the story in one sitting… you lucky bastards.
