Review: Dark Ark #1
By Patrick Wolf
We all know the story of Noah’s ark: Noah rounds up two of every animal, herds them onto his vessel, and keeps them alive until the great flood subsides. But, what if there was another person with the same idea as Noah? And what if, instead of rescuing the animals of the natural world, this person rescued the monsters of the unnatural world? In this dark reimagining of Noah’s ark, Cullen Bunn continues his hot streak of resurrecting old tales and casting a new light on them. So far, this is definitely his best.
Dark Ark takes place in the same universe as Noah’s ark, and features a sorcerer named Shrae. Just as Noah’s been tasked by God to save the animals of Earth, so has Shrae been charged by the devil to save the beasts of Hell. However, when Shrae’s minions spot Noah’s ark, dissent spreads throughout the ranks: Some monsters want to attack, while others don’t. Can Shrae keep the fiends of the dark ark at bay or will he become their next meal?
Again, another fine addition by Cullen Bunn. This guy’s storytelling is so good he’s practically a muse. I love his work, I love his writing style, and I love Dark Ark. While this issue mainly consists of plot setup, it’s compelling enough to make me want more. Dark Ark is such an interesting take on the Noah’s ark legend that I’m surprised no one else has thought of it. What if there was another ark?
I also love the characterization and the wide variety of subplots this series has to offer. All of the characters have their own unique personalities and all of them are terrifying and lovable at the same time. In particular, the manticore Kruul is very fascinating. I’m interested in seeing more of how his subplot develops. I’m also eager to see what happens between the vampires and the naga, as well at the story involving the chained human sacrifices.
As you can see, Dark Ark’s story-arch as a lot to offer. But, that’s not all: the artwork is fantastic as well. In fact, it was mainly because of Juan Doe’s sinister cover that I’m even reviewing this issue at all. The moment I saw that eerie, serpent-like ship emerging out of the crimson fog, I knew I had to at least take a peek. When I saw the writer was Cullen Bunn that was just more gravy. If you’re a fan of great artwork and great writing, make sure you pick up a copy of Dark Ark.
