Review: Godzilla: Rulers of Earth #15
The Kiryu MechaGodzilla lands in Russia to pick up the injured Anguirus and take him to a secret base instead of Monster Island. The Cryog aliens have been posing as Russians, and they have created an army of MechaGodzillas (based on the Shōwaera designs). Those mechanical clones land in Boston to battle with Godzilla. The MechaGodzillas prove to be too much, and Godzilla falls. Meanwhile, Kiryu encounters resistance in Russia from another group of MechaGodzillas dispatched by the Cryog and his telepathic twin consorts.
Godzilla recovers and brings all hell to the MechaGodzillas in Boston. Woods and Allie dig themselves out of the rubble from the kaiju battle. As they break free, an ominous figure looms in the sky above. A figure emerges from the smoke carrying something that will have readers elated and shocked at the same time.
Matt Frank gets a heap of praise from me with this issue because much of Rulers #15 focuses on battles between Godzilla and MechaGodzilla that features no dialogue yet states so much. For instance, the ferocity captured on the face of MechaGodzilla as it slams its hand into Godzilla’s mouth gives the robot monster a demonic anger without breaking the notion that this is an emotionless machine. As Godzilla fights back, the action gets heavy. Yet the fighting comes through clear in each panel.
I also give laud to Chris Mowry for this one, as well. We start with great action, and the action sustains to the very last page. Godzilla becomes integral to the story while the interludes with the humans (and aliens) stays minimal. Best of all, Mowry keeps true to the roots of Godzilla by including such nuances as MechaGodzilla’s rainbow rays, digit armaments, and decapitated look.
I have enjoyed several issues of this series, but hands down this is my favorite. Everything came together just right in issue 15.
