Review: Groo: Friends and Foes #2

Ever since I read the first issue of Groo: Friends and Foes, I’ve been looking forward to get back into the charming adventures of him and his trusty canine companion Rufferto.  This month Groo is among a friend-to an extent-in his Granny Groo. Groo and Rufferto are off wandering again after destroying Captain Ahax’s fleet from last issue.  Groo recognizes the land they’re exploring because the last time he was there, the land didn’t look familiar either.  Typical Groo logic.  He ends up running into a gypsy who tries to read his mind, but can’t because nothing’s going on up there.  She’s mortified at the fact that she found Groo and goes back to her gypsy camp to warn the others.

Groo---Friends-and-Foes-#2-2-18-15It turns out Granny Groo is in a different village pillaging the townspeople, and they’re fed up.  They’re about to go to the gypsy camp and burn it down, but thanks to Groo that has already started.  The townspeople chase Granny Groo back to the gypsy camp but stop dead in their tracks when they realize Groo is present.  They end up pretending to never have had a problem with Granny stealing their belongings and she takes advantage of it.  At this point, the gypsies and the other townspeople are trying to think of a way to get rid of Groo.  Granny doesn’t want to get rid of Groo entirely because he instills fear and is a person of power.  So, she decides to auction him off to the highest bidder and will become their personal bodyguard.  She also plans to use that money to move the gypsy camp in hopes of escaping the enraged townspeople.

I really enjoyed this issue and think although it’s definitely marketable to children, anyone can enjoy it.  There’s tons of clever stuff in here from the snarky remarks of Rufferto to a googly-eyed man who asks one of the gypsies to dance for him.  Overall, if you’re looking for a book that you’ll get a few laughs out of and is just a good time to read, check out Groo: Friends and Foes #2.
