Review: Groo: Friends and Foes #4
Groo is back, but this time he’s about to embark on an adventure with someone just as if not more ridiculous than himself: Arcadio the Hero. Basically, Arcadio looks and acts the part… emphasis on acts. Basically, Arcadio is a con artist who has trained dragons. He takes the dragons from town to town and forces people to pay him to teach them self-defense against dragons, even though the ones Arcadio has are completely harmless under his command. In doing this, Arcadio spreads his so-called “fame” to inflate his ego. It’s clear that Arcadio and Groo have a history as Arcadio calls Groo his “former lackey.” Groo comes across Arcadio’s dragons and scares them off, infuriating Arcadio. The two go on a mission to find the dragons so Arcadio can continue his escapades as a self-proclaimed hero. But when the dragons are really after a village because Groo picks up one of their babies, will Arcadio be the true hero he proclaims himself to be?
I really enjoyed this issue, yet I can’t really understand why, but this childish, quirky book hasn’t gotten old to me yet. I think it’s a testament to the witty writing and vibrant art that have kept this series alive for so long. Out of these first few issues, I think this is the issue with the best funny moments from Groo saying “If I had two dragons” and holding up three fingers to Arcadio failing to impress townsfolk about his heroism.
