Review: Hook Jaw #2
By Chris Tresson
Well, let’s not fuck around here. This series is probably the best Titan Comics is publishing right now. It’s ace and has a great creative team on it and it has a shark in it. I don’t feel like I need to ramble a big introduction to it, so here we go, this is my review of Titan Comics’ Hook Jaw #2. Out this week at your local comic shop.
I really liked the issue. There’s a great opening to this one and a bit of a cheeky nod to the Hook Jaw character and its comic book history. I loved that bit and it just goes to show how awesome Spurrier is as a writer. Though it was a good issue, there wasn't a whole lot of action in this one… but the writing in this part was so good that I didn't really miss it. Plus, i still got to see the shark so who gives a fuck about the amount of action. It's the shark I came for and it's the shark I got.
Simon Spurrier’s writing is top-notch here. He has written some incredibly fun and witty dialog in this one and I have to say that it raised a smirk from me on more than a couple of occasions, especially with the introduction of a new character in the book... I liked her and the way she is a lot. He writes great characters with great personalities and they don’t even have to have anything extraordinary about them for him to do it. That’s skill right there. I'm still really digging the fact he's writing the shark's thoughts too. It makes the shark a bit creepier by giving the reader insight into what it's thinking... Just the fact that it is thinking makes it creepier.
Artist Conor Boyle stays consistent with the artwork and it’s clear that he can really draw the fuck outta of shark. Not too much to comment on art-wise, though. Nothing that really stands out. A lot of it is quite static but then again that comes with the fact that your characters are stuck on a boat talking to one another. I’m sure the next issue’s art will be more dynamic because by the end of the issue, I could tell that the shit will seriously be hitting the fan next time and I'm eager to see how that happens.
Colorist Giulia Brusco does some really nice work in this issue as well. It’s a solid job throughout but I really like the way she colors the horizon in this issue... It looks fantastic and really stands out against everything else going on in the panels in which it’s present. Good stuff.
I am certainly looking forward to seeing the rest of this story unfold and I'm hoping you're following along with me. This is a great title and I hope a lot of you are going to go out to your local comic book shop to buy it. It definitely deserves to have eyes on it.
