Review: How To Keep A Mummy- E.02
By Erika Suarez
Episode 2 changes up it's setting when Sora Takes Mii-kun to school, and we find out that keeping a mummy is actually a handful, much like caring for any pet. Tazuki is eager to know what contains inside the pudgy mummy while the episode delivers simple and effortless character development between Mii-kun and Tazuki.
We’re left with no clear explanation on why Mii-kun gets dried up when he’s left home alone. Now that Sora will be continuing to take him to school, we might not find out the reason to this. Unless we look at it in Mii’s perspective we remind ourselves that he’s closer to possessing a dog’s characteristics and struggles to do things on his own, so Sora has to be there at all times to take care of him. For instance, when Mii-Kun was trying to help with the cooking by cutting cucumbers, the knife was too big for him, so Sora makes a miniature one just for him. He cuts away happily until he trips over a piece of cucumber and falls off the counter and to be saved by his Hero Sora. Taking care of a mummy looks difficult, but the joy and sweet warmth it offers makes it worth it, and I’m not sure how much cuteness I can take.
Tazuki isn’t the only one curious about what lies within the mummies bandages and I hope he hasn’t given up on that question after his attempt to take them off. The scene between Mii-kun and Tazuki was the highlight of this episode. Mii-kun is terrified of Tazuki because of his creepy intentions and Tazuki tries to gain his trust by giving him a piece of his cake only to grab him by surprise and tries to find the ends of his bandages. Sora comes to the rescue by giving him a piece of his mind and gives Tazuki another chance on regaining Mii-kun’s trust by handing him dog food to give to the mummy. Mii-kun comes close to Tazuki’s hand to grab the treat and places it down to caress his finger with much love and affection. Tazuki is surprised and his baleful intentions have been cured away! He can’t possibly torture a mummy this adorable. I hope this doesn’t mean we won’t see the exploration in the mystery behind the mummy’s bandages. It sounds like a big deal knowing that Sora’s father clearly stated not to unwrap them but that makes us even more curious to find out why. Maybe he’s filled with candy or full of bugs. Let’s hope we find out.
Two additional characters casually appear in this episode where we’ve seen from the opening of the show. One of them is Motegi that doesn’t reveal much insight on her characteristics other than she has an extreme interest in Sora’s mummy, but doesn’t know yet that it's actually a live one. Then we see Sora and Tazuki bump into a sad and blond-haired character while they were rushing to find Mii-kun during school and it left us wondering what could be the reasoning behind his mopey attitude. Hopefully these characters will receive a clearer and proper introduction in the next episode but it's for certain these characters will be part of the group along with their own adorably pet monster and making the show a bit more interesting and conflicting.
The episode succeeds in delivering us with soft-hearted and comedic moments and gives us a change of pace by transitioning the setting from home to Sora’s school. Tazuki has become a likable character after watching him change his villainy intentions towards Mii-kun and becomes fond of his sweet and fluffy charms. Love can change a person in many ways I suppose. After this we get a glimpse of the other characters that we’ll soon get to know a little more of with additional pet monsters to keep the show moving.
