Review: Injustice 2 #6

By Ashley Gibbs

It’s really hard to pick a favorite issue in this series, each one is great and amazing to read. Though, I can’t deny being biased towards Injustice 2 #6 since it has many things I enjoy. I love Supergirl, I love an origin story, and I love how this explains why she’s in the video game at all -and where she has been all this time. Unlike most Supergirl stories, Kara has not landed in a safe space where her cousin can show her the ropes, this alternate universe is harsh and unforgiving. This issue has action mixed in with a touching plot that helps build the world up around the characters.

This issue focuses on two things, the fall of Krypton and Kara landing on Earth after the fact. On Krypton, Kara is older than her cousin Kal-El and we see some of her interactions with her family. What we see is a close knit family who loves each other, at least that’s probably all Kara knew. However that peace is not meant to last as most fans know, the planet ends up destroyed and Kara and Kal are sent to live safely on Earth, but Kara’s ship is shaken off course and she lands after he does so now he is older than she is. Unfortunately she lands in the home of Black Adam who tells her a warped version of what’s been happening on the planet since he followed Superman’s Regime. It’s always heartbreaking to see the fall of Krypton, especially when they know they’re going to die but accept it and fight to send their children to safety. But Kal was only a baby, Kara was not and saw the planet explode and everything she knew destroyed, she’s left scarred and is now under the care of someone who can easily manipulate her.

Artwork is top notch as usual, it’s the style I expect when I read a superhero comic by one of the two big name companies. The colors are vibrant, the characters are expressive and animated and all of the backgrounds have great details to them. Stand out moments are Kara’s emotions when she lands on Earth after the trauma she experienced, her eyes filled with sadness and pain. Twice in the issue we are shown her eyes but her pupils are replaced with the planet Krypton being destroyed, the last she ever saw of it.  Another good moment was when Black Adam was explaining the Regime and Superman to her from his own twisted viewpoint, the flashbacks were very well handled.

Injustice 2 #6 is yet another stellar addition to this ongoing series though can be read as a standalone if you’re just in the mood for some Supergirl origin. But as a fan of the character this one really made me want to play the game because I’m now even more excited they added her into Injustice 2. I really do enjoy how this series manages to mix great action and excitement with gripping human emotions we can all relate to, even without having super powers. Comic books are a great storytelling medium and alternate universes are a brilliant way of giving new life to beloved characters.
