Skybound has a new take on the classic myth of the Minotaur and the Labyrinth and it's delivered with impressive results. Elements of horror and adventure come together for an entertaining, heavy, and shocking story about the mad King Minos, the foul minotaur, and Theseus, the hero who can put an end to it all.
This series aims to retell the popular myth without any gimmicky twists. In fact, the only update to the tale appears to be a modern re-imagining of the characters themselves, a welcome change that simultaneously makes the story more accessible and rich with depth through its engaging dialogue. If you're very familiar with the mythology, then this first issue won't be granting you any new information, but I believe it could surprise you with it's thoughtful, impassioned execution. Tonally it ranges from being quite dark and horrific to being humorous and lighthearted. I really enjoyed the variations. The story is generally thrilling and adventurous.
The art is spectacular, somewhat reminiscent of James Stokoe in its detail and character depictions. It's appropriately moody and features beautiful, intricate line work. The movement is illustrated well, and from panel, to panel the visuals are consistently clear. The colors are nothing extravagant but are nevertheless very effectively used. In total, it's a visually satisfying work that guides the story along smoothly.
Not much more can be said. This book is just very solid, quality work. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it, and I'm excited for the next installment.
Kill The Minotaur manages a straightforward simplicity with effective characterization to make the dark and disturbing mythology more accessible, but never sacrifices quality or depth to do so. New layers to the original myth are explored through beautiful, haunting, and extravagantly detailed art. A surprise hit, well worth the purchase.
