Review: Legenderry: Vampirella #1
I love me some Steampunk, I also love me some Vampirella. Before there was Blade she was your go to vampire who hunts vampires and she did it in high heels. Take that Wesley Snipes! This time we take Vampirella into the Steampunk world and it’s very Steampunk. Zepplins? Check. Fancy speaking? Check. Funny slang? Check. Gyrocopters? Check. Moustaches? You better believe that’s a check. Cumbersome futuristic technology? Yep. References to Siam? Not yet but I’m cautiously optimistic. Vampirella comes back to her home city, apparently after fighting in some kind of war thingy, only to find her home condemned. Oh no they dinnit! So she tears off to find who done it, take them out and let their homies know who done it! There’s really not a whole lot going on in the story. We get a refresher that lets us know there are events that happened before this but there’s a lot of foundation building going on here. We have a shadowy and mysterious “Council”, we have a dashing swashbuckler offering his services to the Council and we have Vamiprella opposing the Council. We also have a shady leader of the Council but we don’t actually see him. My guess is that it’s either perennial Vampy foe Dracula or perennial vamp foe Van Helsing. Those are kind of your two choices when it comes to vampire stories.
I liked the story, I like the character, I liked the setting and the art is good too. It’s solid but I don’t know if I’d recommend it to non-Vampirella fans. Or even non-Steampunk fans. If you like Vampirella you’ll find enough here to keep your interest. If you like Steampunk you might find enough here to get you past the Vampirella aspect. If you are neither then I don’t really know what’s here for you. There’s not a whole lot of groundbreaking. There’s so little groundbreaking, in fact, that it has been classified as none. There is none groundbreaking in this… as decreed… by the US Groundbreaking Federation. So it won’t blow you mind unless you’re already on the hook for a different reason.
