Full-disclosure: when I agreed to review Mickey Mouse – Shadow of The Colossus I… thought it was a crossover between the video game Shadow of The Colossus and either Epic Mickey or Kingdom Hearts. So, to say I was disappointed when I looked at it and learned that wasn’t the case was an understatement. That’s my problem though. What we do have here is actually a really fun book. We find our heroes Mickey and Goofy on a trip around Europe that takes them to Greece, home of the legendary statue called Colossus! While on a bike ride, the two run into their friend, archaeologist Eurasia Toft. Toft is looking to learn more about how the Colossus vanished after an Earthquake years ago without a trace.
Unbeknownst to Eurasia, Mickey, and Goofy, dark forces are plotting to use the knowledge of the ancient creation to take over the world. It’s a classic tale that would fit right in with a block of Saturday morning Disney cartoons. Possibly between Talespin and Chip 'N Dale Rescue Rangers.
Admittedly, I’m not familiar with Mickey's comic adventures, and obviously there have been past (and likely will be future) adventures involving Eurasia which is cool. I think she offers a fresh take on familiar character types. Mickey's crew is pretty well-known: Donald, Goofy, Daisy, Minnie, and occasionally Clarabelle. Eurasia obviously isn’t a mainstay of the cast, but if these are the type of adventures she gets Mickey and his friends to engage in, then her few appearances certainly are to be looked forward to.
In addition to the story the Colossus, this Trade also collected a number of other stories including Bridge on the River Ai-Yai. I’d have probably paid more attention to them, but I was still recovering from the whole “this isn’t a crossover” sadness. Still am. (Such potential! Unfulfilled!)
Overall, this is a really fun all-ages Disney book. I think just about anyone can enjoy this, if they can read. Would make a great gift, especially for an older Disney fan.
