Review: Planet of Daemons #1

By Chris Tresson

I’ve been looking at this title just sitting on our review list for a couple of weeks now. I wanted someone else to review it because I recently worked with the artist on this book and thought it would be a somewhat biased review of the book. But with the quality of the mainstream comics on offer this week being poor, and this book coming out this week, it’s pretty much forced my hand.

Firstly, this is the second time I’ve read an Amigo comic… The first book I read was Unleashed, which I didn’t rate at all. To me, Amigo Comics aren’t really known for the quality of their titles. When I think of them, I think low print runs and all those motherfuckers flipping Amigo books on eBay… Though I have been informed that people have gotten wise to that now. So now there’s probably guys out there stuck with ten copies of this with no one to sell to. Serves you right, Arsehole.

Anyway, this is my review of Kevin Gunstone and Paul Moore’s Planet of Daemons #1.

Right, this story is set in Mid-17th Century America where everyone’s a bit weary of witchcraft and obviously, there’s a planet of daemons. Upon reading the issue, the first thing I noted was the fact that because it’s set in the 17th century, everyone speaks like a wanker… I’m not a big fan of period pieces and as a writer myself, if I was writing this, I think I would have neglected to set it in any particular time period. You can easily get past the dialogue, though, and once you do it’s not a bad little story.

Gunstone has clearly done his homework before writing this and if you’re one of the uninitiated when it comes to demonology and would like to know more, you’re going to enjoy it. For me, I know all about this sort of stuff so it the intrigue out of it. I did like the ending of this issue, and it’s done enough to make me want to see what happens next.

I really like Paul Moore’s art, regardless of what he’s drawing. He has a style that stands out against other up and coming artists work. It’s a loose style but I think it’s a style that could be applied to any genre/title/character. I enjoyed his work in this book and I’ll more than likely continue to read it just to show my support for Paul because he’s a good guy. The color work in this issue is a bit hit and miss, not a massive problem, though. Still a pretty nice job.

So, to finish this review, I didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I would but it still wasn’t that bad of an issue... I’ve certainly read worse books recently. if you’re stuck for something to read this week and you like your demons and don’t mind people speaking weird, give it a bash. Providing some bastard hasn’t been in and bought all the copies at your local comic shop already… Fuck those guys.

Score: 3/5
