Review: Pregnant Bitches of War #2
This is probably one of the best new series of the year and if you thought the crazy antics of the first issue were going anywhere then you clearly haven’t been paying attention to this series. This issue actually came out a few weeks back but I just never got around to reviewing it. Well that changes today as we take a long hard look at PBOW! In the last issue the ladies messed up the time stream when one of them when bat-shit crazy on Hitler. Not only did she get her ass erased in time, but when the girls were returned to their time period they discovered that Nazi’s controlled the planet.
This issue opens by introducing our villain known as Exalted Father. Outside of his cell (yeah he keeps himself in a cell) two guards argue about bothering him. On the door there are several signs giving mixed signals about approaching, but the overall message is don’t… just don’t. One brave guard decides to just open the door and talk to him. We see the back of Exalted Father’s head and you can instantly tell there is something seriously fucked up about this guy. He takes a moment and puts a bag over his head with a smiley face drawn on it with blood before talking to the solider. AF is informed that the PBOW’s are there and the solider is rewarded accordingly.
On the PBOW side of things the ladies are being asked for their pregnancy papers… at gun point. They put up a struggle until Tesla shows up and saves them. He’s different now with half of his brain exposed (kind of like the Exalted Fathers!) and an obviously dyed mustache. He transports them to the resistances base after taking care of the police and explains everything that happened after Marni went ape on Hitler.
First off… everything Exalted Father does or says makes me laugh. He’s hilarious and sick in the head all at the same time. He’s makes for a great villain because he’s so demented. His door for instance is the perfect example of his personality as it says “come in” and “go away” at the same time making it a big question mark on which one to follow and really I get the impression that no matter what you pick it’ll be wrong.
As for the story the plot definitely picked up in this issue and fell in line with the genre more. Time travel is messy and this book shows what happens when you mess up the timeline in a big way. Now there was definitely a lot of exposition in this issue from Tesla, but it worked. I would have liked more interaction with Birdie, but she did all the heavy lifting in the last issue so I get why we weren’t overloaded with her. I’m on the fence with the Gordon H. Bennett joke. Sometimes it amuses me other times it seems really out-of-place. Overall I enjoyed the writing and the humor though.
The artwork really is the perfect fit for this story; it matches the humor of the series quite well. Since there is a lot of dark humor and gore I can also say that it fits that perfectly as well. There’s a scene later on in the issue in which a dude gets killed (not going to spoil how) and part of his face hits one of the Exalted Father’s men in the face and he just leaves it there throughout the entire conversation. It’s gross, but oh so funny at the same time.
I get that not everyone is going to enjoy this book or find it humorous. Some people may even think that I’m disturbed for liking it and frankly I don’t give a damn. This book isn’t serious in the least bit. It’s just trying to tell a crazy story and maybe even explore a possible scenario of what would happen if you killed Hitler before he committed his crimes against humanity. Mostly it just makes me laugh and that’s a rare thing in the world of comics.
