Review: Solar - Man of the Atom #4

The issue opens with a flashback that informs readers how Phil Seleski happened upon the power of the Atom.  The narrative shifts to Erica dealing with the invading alien monsters. Colin Seleski meets with Nuro regarding his father’s lab.  When he denies Nuro’s offer, Colin makes the longhaired man very, very angry.

Solar04-Cov-Doe copy 2Meanwhile in space, Erica discovers why the aliens are attack.  They need the power of the atom to refuel their ship.  After pulling a Ripley blasting the alien of a tear in the ship, Erica realizes that she is far from home.

Late at night in his office, Colin Seleski reveals a very interesting fact about himself.

Although the comic has finally hit its pace, there exists one very unsettling weakness.  Erica now deals with the power of the Atom as though she has been blasting beams form her hands all her life.  I’m not faulting her gusto and the ascension as a strong female character.  What I am pointing out is that she approached the power in issue two with great uncertainty and fear.  In just a short time she spots profanity as she duels with an alien out to kill her.  Housewife to interstellar conqueror in two issues feels a little odd.

Solar did a great job with the new approach of having Erica adopt the mantle of the Man of the Atom and having her father as a spirit mentor, but the rapid advancement of her character stretches believability a bit too far.
