Review: Spring #4
Usually I write pretty long reviews. That’s not going to be the case with Spring #4, because the two major reveals will basically spoil the entire story for you. I’m going to do my damndest to not even give you a hint of what’s going on because I’ve always been partial to this series, even if this issue steps away from what’s become the norm for it. The gist is that we learn what’s going on with all the people in the lake and what’s behind the Venus probe’s crashing. They’re tied together and while there aren’t big consequences for the universe it does add some clever backstory to the Night of the Living Dead story. That’s the part I appreciate the most that it adds to the story. Granted you can look at this as one big retcon, but it works and I personally don’t see it as a disrespect to the original material. If you want that then search for other comics with the name and you’ll find that they’re all pretty crappy.
So this issue does break from the norm. We don’t spend the entire time with the swimmers that are going through a crazy scenario that makes no sense with the rest of the universe. It will make sense after this issue. It’s a good issue and the dialogue flows quite well even when there’s exposition. There kind of needs to be exposition because we’re getting a big reveal and it’s the best way to reveal it. I didn’t mind it. There’s good exposition and then there’s bad, this is the former.
Hey guess what? The art is still good. This series has always looked good and it continues to look good in this issue. It’s definitely been one of the more consistent books on artwork. The backgrounds are very lush in this issue which gives the story a full and lively look.
That’s it folks. I don’t need to say more because unlike Soul, this issue would be worthless if I gave you the spoilers. It’s the journey to the reveals that make it worthwhile. Spring has always been a weird book, but not it makes sense and that’s pretty cool. It’s made the journey worth it and I’ll be looking forward to the next issue.
