If you didn’t read the first issue of Corey Lewis’ anthology series Sun Bakery, then I feel sorry for you because it’s by far the best anthology being published in comics and it’s all being done by one man. Lewis has crafted four ongoing stories that have varying length this issue, but all of them and I mean all of them, are damn good. What’s nice is that Lewis keeps the series in the same order.

Like the first issue, the anthology kicks off with Arem which is Lewis’ Metroid inspired story about a woman trying to snap great photos. That’s right, it’s not just Metroid, but a little Beyond Good and Evil as well. The story is pretty simple and short this time, but the jokes are really on point. As for that art, it’s once again all monochromatic with purple being the color of choice. The art is also different from the other stories. Sure the style is present, but it has a different visual presentation than other stories like Bat Rider.

After that is, of course, Dream Skills, the amazing story about the world that no longer has guns because everyone has swords. This story was great because it has a crossover with another of Lewis’ properties, but I’ll let that part be a surprise. There’s technically two chapters for this story so don’t think there’s a jump in the story like I did. The second half is just as good and produced a panel that I would seriously consider getting as a tattoo. Like for real.

The story that surprised me was Bat Rider. It’s in all black and white which makes it stand out already, but there was a cool element introduced. I want to read more of this story in the future, but I’ll settle for Lewis’ manga style anthology updates. Also, I appreciate how much Lewis changes up his style on this story. His lines aren’t as thick, and he uses the negative space intelligently.

There’s also a one-page story with some 90s comic inspiration. Because it’s one page I’m not even going to tell you about it, but it was quite funny and reminded me of the one-page stories that you’ll find in the back of manga volumes in which the creator is just having fun with their characters outside of the main story.

Sun Bakery is extremely entertaining, but it’s also really well put together. For one creator to not only tell three stories and some change, but then to also illustrate all the stories for a monthly anthology is just crazy, but it works. Maybe one day we’ll get individual collections of each story which would be pretty cool, but in the meantime, I’ll just continue to enjoy the hell out of this amazing anthology.
