Review: The Joyners #1
Cue the music… Meet George Joyner! His soon to be ex-wife (Sonya)! The two kids who are barely characters in this book! Alright enough of the music. Anyways, this is a comic about a science fiction Earth where people live on the moon, have flying cars, robots, and machines that cloth or brush their teeth. Pretty much Jetsons meets slightly “adult” themes, but not the fun kind, more like watching people discuss having a divorce, and passively or just plain aggressively having conversations. The comic starts with a flash forward where Sonya signs divorce papers and says George will be in jail for life and has confessed to everything. For what crimes? No one says why in this comic.
We then go back however long before the prologue and meet George Joyner and some guy who is flying. They have apparently made some grand discovery that they have tested. What is it exactly? No one says what it is in this comic.
But we do get a nice long conversation in a flying car with George saying his marriage isn’t working. But why exactly isn’t the marriage working, what caused this rift? No one says why in this comic.
Next we meet George’s former (and likely future?) lover, who works with George at the sprocket factory. George’s former and future lover has a proposed project that is going into production soon, what is the project? You guessed, it's not said in this comic! But the chalkboard says chassis, so maybe it was mentioned. The background art said it, so first thing actually explained in the comic achieved!
If you can’t guess, there are a lot of questions in this comic, and nearly no answers. Yes, I understand first issues usually stay away from answering everything, but there is so little actually here. Honestly the only question the comic poses and explains is where George’s son’s basketball is. That was never a burning question, and the answer lead to a super confusing page where a character stands up, walks away, finds the basketball, and tosses into someone’s face. Then the next page it is like the basketball toss never happened. I think that pretty much explains this comic: a confusing mess that never goes anywhere. If you want to read about marital chaos, this is the comic for you. If you want interesting characters and a good story, this isn’t for you.
