Review: The Sixth Gun #50

It’s been a long ride for The Sixth Gun. I remember picking up the first issue which was free on Free Comic Book Day. Oni Press was the only publisher that was actually launching the first issue of an ongoing series. Think about that for a minute. The Sixth Gun launched as a free issue and here it is… forty-nine issues later and wrapping up what’s been an incredible run for a creator owned title. If only other publishers would use Free Comic Book Day the same way… think of how many other series could grab a huge readership instead of collectors just grabbing for a FCBD reprint or a zero issue for an event book. That’s not why we’re here, though. We’re here for the last issue of The Sixth Gun. I’ll full admit that I haven’t kept up with this series like I once did. When I was at the comic shop weekly I would grab it, but between the site and digital, I’ve dropped off the series only popping back on here and there. That’s a fun fact that no one cares about. Reviewers get so much to review that you eventually stop reading the stuff you want because you don’t have the time to read everything.

6GUN-#50-MARKETING_PREVIEW-1As far as the issue goes… well I’m not going to spoil it if that’s what you’re worried about. It’s Cullen Bunn and Brian Hurtt’s opus. They close it out in style and the ending is rewarding, it’s sad and even leaves a little for you to question. It ends perfectly. The great thing about Bunn’s writing on this series is that even though I haven’t read the series in over a year, I was still able to figure out and understand everything going on. Maybe the payoff wasn’t as great for me as someone that’s current, but that says a lot about the writing if I still think it was solid.

Brian Hurtt is the real star. He’s grown so much as an artist and I’m curious to see what he does next because he’s been a machine on this series. There’s several splash pages that he just goes off on. Practically every character from the series makes an appearance for the epic battle. The issue has some striking visuals and overall is just incredible visually.

There’s not much else to say about this issue. The creative team closes it out wonderfully. I’ve always preferred the way that Bunn writes on this series and this ending reiterates that. Even if you dropped off the series, you should still grab this issue to see how it all ends. You won’t be disappointed.
