Review: The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #2

Squirrel Girl continues to be just absolutely adorable as we go barreling towards Squirrel Girls confrontation with Galactus.  Something I’m just dying to see personally.  Along the way Squirrel Girl tries to find a college club, talks to hunky dudes and steals Iron Man’s armor. I like everything about this book.  Squirrel Girls voice is precious, just precious, but it’s also unique and character appropriate.  She’s young and impulsive and energetic and just a little naïve with a touch of awkwardness.  Deadpool’s informative cards come back into play to tell us about Galactus’ Star Sphere.  The Deadpool informative cards are a great way to introduce some of the more obscure parts of the Marvel Universe while still poking fun at them.  That’s probably the thing I like best about the series is that it doesn’t take itself too seriously.  There’s always that little bit of fun poking in every issue so far.  We have Deadpool’s encyclopedia, the little captions at the bottom over every page (they can be pretty funny, look for them), the art and the writing itself all work to create something light hearted and fun.

The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #2 2-5-15Light hearted and fun are two things mainstream comics used to have that went missing around the time Alan Moore and Frank Miller started.  The only other current comic that has me this entertained in this way is Quantum and Woody.  I feel the same things reading Quantum and Woody as I do reading Squirrel Girl even though in tone and theme they are entirely different.

It’s a fun book and I’m really looking forward to seeing what’s next.  I think Squirrel Girl will really shine as a cameo book.  Yeah put some focus on her secret identity, her supporting cast seems pretty interesting, but throw in a different hero every month along with a different villain and I think the interaction between the two heroes would cause some sparks to fly.  I can’t wait to see if they have her team up with Howard the Duck, Captain Marvel, She Hulk, Kamala Khan’s Ms. Marvel or any number of characters!  Wolverine would be a fun interaction but he’s dead now right?  They had interesting chemistry in the Avengers book but that was a much more adult tone with a much more adult Squirrel Girl.  I kind of prefer the colorful and bouncy Squirrel Girl myself and I really prefer this book.  It’s fast becoming a monthly highlight.
