Review: TMNT: Mutanimals #3
This is a team that knows what it's doing, not the Mutanimals they're still figuring stuff out, I mean the team writers and artists. This whole thing rings like a perfectly struck bell. Every element of this comic comes together into a perfect package. We pick up where we left off with Slash and Mondo chasing down the rest of the gang, who're trapped on a freight train. There is an excellent scene once they get into the train and a whole bunch of guards try to force Slash into a cage. As the cage door closes on him, Something gets uncaged within him and he goes berserk, literally throwing people through the train wall (slightly unrealistic, but who cares, he's a giant snapping turtle). This is one of those moments that handled poorly would be one of those ' and then he gets angry and destroys things', but Paul Allor turns this into an inner turmoil for Slash and real conflict with the rest of the group who become afraid of him.
Andy Kuhn and Nick Filardi fill every page and panel with artwork that makes you go back multiple times. You would think it would be hard to convey a story using mutant animals and getting across their emotions. Andy Kuhn nails it every panel, breathing life into these unique characters. He does such a good job that they almost feel real. Nick Filardi follows this up by adding the perfect color tones to each character and backdrop to accentuate the story. The colors are dark and moody and add so much to the setting.
All this great art is wonderful, but without a decent story to follow it up, it would feel hollow. This story gets better and better each issue. It has a sense of purpose, starting with one things which leads organically into the next before setting up a genuine cliffhanger that makes you wonder what the hell will happen next. That's good story-telling. Paul Allor adds to this by giving each character dialogue that feels unique to that character (some are a little stretched like the 'Sir, yes Sir' from Herman). This just adds to the reality of the world they've made. Pigeon Pete is still on top for my favorite character, he kills it every panel he's in.
