Recently, I have read several great Kickstarter funded comics. The great thing about Kickstarter is it gets not just original comics made, but unique and inventive comics. Transdimensional is a sci-fi horror comic with some great elements. This issue builds successfully on those elements, and the premise of the first issue, as it takes us deeper into the mystery of the sunken Russian submarine.

The last issue got us into the mind of Deacon as he tried to make sense of the possible loss of his daughter to her illness. In this issue Deacon and his estranged wife, Grace must set aside their problems so they can do their work. They’ve made it to the sunken sub and must now board it to find out what actually caused its demise. It’s no spoiler to say it’s not pleasant what they find.

The artwork continues to be phenomenal in this book. The colors are some of the best of any book out there. Rather than going the dark, ambiguous, blacks route that a lot of horror comics take, it uses shades of red to heighten the horror. The linework and layouts are consistent and put you right in the drama. Those underwater scenes are so much fun to look at.

We don’t get the psychological horror in this issue as we did in the last, but you can’t put everything in twenty-two pages; it would be easy to put too much into the issue. This story was firmly about Deacon and Grace learning to work together despite their strained relationship. By the end of the issue, they’ll be forced together through a strange occurrence. This issue saves the horror for the climax and keeps up a suspenseful pace right to the end.

With only two issues left, there is still more story to tell. This issue didn’t move the story along that much compared to the first issue, so it’ll be interesting to see how much the next issue moves the plot forward. The comic does seem to hit a stride with this issue, though. The last issue had its wrinkles, but everything seems to be smoothed out. It really seems this comic knows where it wants to go, and I’m really looking forward to the next installment. That ending left me needing to know what happens next!
