Review: Vamplets: Nightmare Nursery #1

You just can’t resist Vamplets. I mean just one look at these little vampyres. So or course it was my turn to take a read of these little adorable creatures. Beyond that, I really hadn’t heard anything about Vamplets though. This could be a good thing or bad thing when it comes to comics. But once reading this issue, it is fairly obvious why I hadn’t heard anything of it; I don’t have kids. The definite audience is for children, but I have said it once and I’ll say again, I can put myself in kid’s shoes to review this thing. Just know that my audience becomes kids as well or parents that have kids. The readers get introduced to Destiny, a girl who dreams of being something bigger. Already this is relatable because what girl or boy doesn’t dream of being special. It is cute and is actually kind of cool how the readers know that Destiny has something special; she just can’t see it. Actually when something unbelievable happens to her, she doesn’t even think she is special, but I’ll get to that in a moment.

Vamplets-#1-CoverAnyway, although Destiny is our main character, the comic started with the history of the vampyres. It is a different take and very cute as well. (Yeah no PG-13 to talk about here, so a plus on that regard) But with all this love going around, Gloomvania now has a huge nursery with no one to take care of all these vampyres. It seems that town is sort of snobbing just based on the fact that no one wants to take care of their kids. You can tell that there is a lot of stuff wrong with this town. So not only do I think Gloomvania needs someone to take care of the vampyres, they need lots of changes from my first judgement.

Of course the obvious choice for the job is Destiny. She is great with kids, her one talent according to her. She draws this strange creature from Gloomvania with her necklace and finds out about the job opening. This is that moment that I was talking about to you before. Destiny sees this giant talking moth following her and yet still thinks she isn’t special. I think this will be a recurring theme that would be great for young kids to learn.

Gayle Middleton and Dave Dwonch have a great step up for this story. The plot isn’t too complicated, but yet it’s still fun. Lots of kids will get hooked on its playful style and horrorish town. I always like when writers create a new world for us. But of course some of this credit needs to Amanda Coronado, the artist for this issue. She really captures the style of the writers and manages to create a gloomy place filled with so cute things. Seriously, the cuteness is overwhelming.

I think readers will get hooked after issue #1. We don’t get to see Destiny with the vampyres, so we can look forward to that with issue #2. She should be good, but honestly I don’t know a thing about these little guys. Are they well behaved? Are they like normal babies? Will they try and suck her blood? I hope to find all this out in issue #2, as I am sure other kids are anxious to see Destiny in Gloomvania and how this suspicious town will play out.
