Review: Weekly Shonen Jump no. 18

By Dustin Cabeal

Hey, there’s more for me to review in this issue! Yay! I will update you that I’m getting closer and closer to being caught up on Black Clover, so you’ll likely see me reviewing that one in the future. After the difficulty in catching up on One-Punch Man, I might just jump to it when I get close. Get it? Jump! Anyway, I didn’t review Food Wars!, My Hero Academia and One Piece in addition to not reviewing Black Clover.

Boruto: Naruto Next Generations – Ch: 011 – Score: 2/5

It’s the curse of the big battle. There is nothing going on in this chapter and even worse, what little build up there is, is clearly for a filler story. Boruto has been asked to guard a rich brat from the Fire nation or some shit. I don’t know if they’re called “Fire Nation” that might be an Avatar thing. There’s some decent action for a moment, but that’s about it. They advertise the card game within the story… it was shit. The art was also strangely inconsistent with its inking. It was too light in some areas, too dark in others, but other than that… shit.

The Promised Neverland – Ch: 033 – Score: 5/5

Hot damn this story is getting good. In the last chapter, we saw Ray light himself on fire. Yeah, that was pretty damn intense. Let’s just say that this issue, flips everything on its head. I have no fucking clue what to expect from the next chapter, but it’s clear that no matter what happens during this escape attempt, the rest of the story is going to be different. It needs to be. Otherwise, it’ll ruin everything it’s built up until this point.

The artwork was very intense and detailed. There’s not a lot of “action” per say, but there are some intense moments that look great. The creator poured everything into this chapter.

Robot x Laserbeam – Ch: 003 – Score: 3/5

The final Jump Start chapter of Robot x Laserbeam ended up being just okay. It’s ending was certainly a lot stronger than the vast majority of other Jump Start titles, and if I were to rank them, it would be second. The issue is that at this point in the story it can’t rely on Robo hitting golf balls at the range anymore and so the story moves to an actual golf course. There’s, of course, the misunderstanding that gets cleared up on the final page, which was annoying. That’s an idiot’s plot if I’ve ever read one (Thanks, Levi!).

Still, I’m very curious about this story and seeing the evolution of Robo’s character, especially since his gimmick has just been hitting the ball straight which doesn’t mean particularly much on the golf course. The art maintained a clean and detailed look and would pull in a solid second place once again if ranked which I might do in a separate post.

One-Punch Man – Ch: 069 – Score: 4/5

This is a strange chapter of One-Punch Man because I liked it a lot, but it wasn’t perfect. Saitama’s abilities aren’t shown that much, but the humor is great. Just as the story is gaining momentum, though, they stop the fight, which doesn’t stop the fight. The fight does change from there, though, and it has a different tone. Then the story informs everyone present that there are monsters attacking and it changes once again. The monsters move into the stadium and a new tournament of sorts starts, but boom, the chapter ends. It’s pretty clear that the creators don’t particularly give a shit about the pacing and are instead focused on the overall pacing of the narrative. I’m fine with that, but it does leave some clunky chapters like this one, which is why it’s not perfect, but still a hell of an entry into the overall story of One-Punch Man.

Thanks for reading, keep an eye out for that Jump Start ranking that will likely be up shortly after this review.
