Review: Witchblade #183
After getting a brand new job, Sara Pezzini, bearer of the Witchblade, cop, and purveyor of good... is part of a robbery and then straight up murders two people. One of them seems to have been a mystical creature so maybe it isn't an actual crime in New York. During these fights, Sara is once again randomly quipy and nonchalant while she is doing these morally bad things. This is her first job for her new boss, breaking several laws and committing murder. Yet when her second victim, with his dying breath, offers proof that maybe Sara is working for an evil person, she is SHOCKED! How inept and naive is our main character? This is the same character who has been betrayed by a ton of other characters throughout the years. She has had epic fights, and even survived the destruction and recreation of the entire universe. Yet someone offers her a ton of money, she just totally believes she's on the right side. This could maybe work if this was issue two of a comic, with a character who seriously doesn't know better, but when we are at issue 183, it is just asking too much.
After the theft, the henchman who was with Sara meets with their mutual employee, Amaryll. Who straight up says in two pages that she is evil. She also is happy to hear that Sara is still clueless of being manipulated. Also, why is Amaryll wearing the most unbelievably skin showing dress and posing perfectly to proclaim how happy she is about Sara's cluelessness? Oh right, this is a Top Cow book, sorry I forgot.
The book ends with Sara reading the book given to her by the guy she murdered earlier. It informs us that yes Amaryll is evil and once upon a time knights defeated her. Sara, finally realizing that her boss is evil (besides every single trope, act, and word spoken by her said so) says a few encouraging words and poses in her house all by herself.
This entire book feels like lazy writing. Apparently Witchblade will be ending soon. It is sad to see that this is the story it will be dragging across the finish line. Maybe when it eventually gets revamped and relaunched it will be done better.
