Review: X #23 (Dark Horse)

In the wake of last month’s destructive issue, we’re left with part of X’s precious city destroyed.  This issue X is back with a vengeance as his troubles increase when another threat presents itself: a gang known as Swine Revolution. X-#23Swine Revolution has taken control of North Arcadia, the part of the city’s that’s been destroyed.  They are hell-bent on spreading a new drug that called Sangre de Cerdo or Sangre for short.  Basically, it’s pig’s blood that seems to typically be injected in the eye that has been causing more street assaults, burglaries, and home invasions.  The whole gang is distributing the drug and is headed by the mysterious Gundog, who much like X doesn’t reveal his face.  He also is known to worship pigs.

The issue pretty much follows X trying to dismantle this operation and get closer to Gundog.  I was pretty disappointed in the issue overall as it seems like we’re just given a new drug with a new gang X has to clean up and that’s it.

I don’t want to spoil anything but the big events in this issue are thanks to characters we’ve already seen come and go which just feels rehashed.  The only thing that I really enjoyed about this issue was the brief moment where we’re given more insight to X.  We get to learn what happened to his eye and a bit about what kind of person he was.  Other than that though, I was very dissatisfied with this installment.  This has been one of my favorite titles for a long time, but this issue didn’t do anything for me.
