Worst Anime of 2017

Hey, we got through the Best/Worst of movies for 2017 and here we are on the Worst Anime of 2017. You can see the best here and look out for comic books later today. It was a rough year for anime, there's a lot of shit that could have made this list, but here are my picks!
5. My Girlfriend Is Too Much To Handle
I almost feel a little sorry putting this one on my list, but at the end of the day, it was a bad show. It failed at the comedic element of the show, and that’s the main reason it's on the list. The sex jokes could have been hilarious, but they never landed. Most of it was the pacing, but a lot of it was the voice acting. Whoever directed the character actors just missed so many opportunities to make the comedy work and shine really. The animation was also disappointing in that they didn’t even try to illustrate background characters, instead opting for neon green and pink outlines that were distracting and frankly shitty to look at. While it wasn’t the absolute worst thing I saw this year, it was a big disappointment and honestly a lazy show to watch.
4. Masamune-kun no Revenge
People that read my manga list last year shouldn’t be too surprised to see this show on my anime list. I hated the first volume of the manga. Like a lot. With so many other adaptations on this list, you might sense a theme of “they changed so much they got it wrong,” well not this time. They kept it the same, if anything the parts they added were logical to the story, but still made the story suck. Here’s the thing, when none of the characters are likable, then who do I root for? I didn’t want anyone to win; I wanted them all to suffer for being shitty humans. The art was beautiful, and I know it was a popular show, but I’m not a teenager anymore, and you have to have a story that’s worth watching and characters that aren’t all pieces of shit to hold my interest.
3. My Hero Academia – Season 2
Here’s the thing, I liked this manga a lot. I liked the first season a lot minus all the extra crying they added because they couldn’t figure out how to stretch out the tears. The second season was offensive in that it only provided 10 to 14 minutes of new material each week. The problem is that the runtime of the show was 24 minutes. The shitty songs were way too long, but then the entire first four minutes was just a clip show of what happened in the last episode. While all that is terrible, what’s worse is that you can see the show and story morphing into the typical shonen style story. Which is a shame considering it was a plus in my book for not just going with the flow. At first, it had a good mix of east and west, but now it’s just typical Shonen, but finding new levels of annoyance. Frankly put, I would rather watch Goku charge a spirit bomb for seven or eight episodes than to watch a ten-minute show disguised as a full episode.
2. Fuuka
How was Fukka not the worst adaptation this year? You’ll see when you read my number one pick, but let’s just say without number one on the list this would have been the worst thing I struggled through this year. I absolutely loved the manga, but this anime adaptation decided to throw out a central plot line, but then try and keep the same character development and instead just made some garbage. I hope this never gets a sequel because it was just an offensive piece of crap that wanted to be a love triangle instead of a guy trying to get over the love of his life dying and keep her and his dream alive of being the next big rock band. Instead, it was just a contest to see who could kiss this dude first and it sucked. That and the music was shitty… its an anime about music, it shouldn’t have shitty music. That’s all I can say about this show, I’m getting made again.
1. Black Clover
No other show disappointed me more than Black Clover. I know I’m in the minority because most anime viewers are happy watching the same tired ass shonen formula over and over. “Well, Bleach is over so I need something to fill the time I spent wondering if this show would go anywhere.” I imagine that’s the motivation for watching what is the worst possible adaptation I’ve ever seen. I’m not going to go into it too much since I already wrote an extensive piece on what is wrong with Black Clover, but plainly put the manga broke the formula and made advancements in the genre, but the anime regressed that and went back to a formula two decades old that everyone should be fucking tired of.
