Worst of 2016: Mayday
By Dustin Cabeal
The worst thing that can happen to a comic is to leave the reader guessing about what they were supposed to get from it. At the end of the day, it should still be pretty clear to the reader even if a degree of that is on them. With Mayday, I couldn’t tell if it was a comedy, drama or just trying to be so different from everything like it that it lost its way. I didn’t laugh. Maybe it wasn’t supposed to be funny, but it sure as hell felt like it was trying, but then that’s the problem. I just didn’t know what it was trying to do.
I’ll also totally admit that I have zero interest in Cold War stories. Zero. You can make me interested in them if you’re story is good enough, but Mayday came across as a story that was more in love with the setting than telling me a story in that setting. Everything that happened was pretty generic, just with little twists that weren’t particularly groundbreaking or new. It’s the journey often that makes a comic good, but Mayday hit every damn bump in the road like some shitty 21 Pilots song.
