Worst of 2016: Tegami Bachi
By Dustin Cabeal
This series is hella far into its run so I will admit that I’m coming in very late in the game. That said, I don’t know why anyone would read this series long enough to get to this point. The premise is maddening. Dystopian future in which people’s fucking souls get sucked out in the middle of the night and brought to machines or insects or some shit. It was as if the creator watched Kevin Costner’s The Postman and then added fucking souls and bug monsters.
Tegami Bachi has gone on for so long that the creator had to do the classic “change the main character’s personality” instead of developing their character. It’s a hard switch that’s explained through trauma rather than making it interesting and building the change over time. I think the story is getting ready for the final battle, but even that part felt rushed and tacked on. To put it another way, I disliked this book so much that I couldn’t even write a review for it.
