Review: Adventure Time – The Flip Side #2 (of 6)

I’m constantly in awe of everything Pendleton Ward does; maybe it could be said that he is this generation’s Dr. Seuss? And if you haven’t kept up with Pendleton Ward creations, here is another spin off Adventure Time series that will instill your heart with some warm gooey feelings. I have been anxiously awaiting the new issue of Flip-Side, as I was left with so many unanswered questions last month.  A little background on what Flip-Side is about: everything starts getting reversed until Finn and Jake complete a quest that was posted on the back side of a forum board. Their quest entails them to do something that goes against the laws of gravity…Well not really, they have to convince the Monkey prince to kidnap Princess Painting which is everything our heroes are so not about. But if they want to save the fate of Ooo, they are going to need a little help from a princess kidnapping fiend. Our lovable villain, Ice King has all kinds of ploys to get the princess kidnapped such as writing fan fiction, picking flowers or you know, stealing the gem of desire to plant on the Monkey prince. Ice King is just like finally Finn and Jake include me in their bro-tastic adventures! But sadly yet comically, as all Ice King’s endeavors go, this plan too goes awry with a strange unexpected twist with Ricardio?? Wait, what?! I thought his fifteen minutes of fame were over like a season ago. Welp, I guess we are just going to have to wait to see what kind of scheme Ice King can devise in the next issue. Bring it on, Paul Tobin and Colleen Coover.

I am just loving the creative team for this series, their execution of Ice King in this issue was so spot on. Even though Flip-Side is all about Ooo getting all jacked up and reversed, the personalities of the characters remain intact.  Probably my favorite aspect of the issue is the random plot-less scenes that add to the child-like humor. I mean when does cake and heists ever go hand in hand besides in Adventure Time?  Flip-Side is the kind of story you keep hidden in your text books, when you need a little haphazard nonsense pick me up break from hydrologic- meteorologic networks or whatever you’re into.
