Review: Alex + Ada #7
Alex + Adahas been a series that I’ve been pulling for all along and I’m really glad to say that this is the issue us fans of the series have been waiting for. Alex’s carefully articulated plan is starting to unravel as Ada was spotted in their backyard by their next-door neighbor Jody. She seems very frightened that an android lives next to her which is made even more apparent because she’s holding her infant son. Luckily for Ada though, Jody doesn’t realize that she’s sentient. That said, Jody is the nosy type and warns the whole neighborhood of Ada’s existence. When Alex talks to Jody on his way back from grocery shopping, he is madder at her than Ada. Ada says she’ll stay inside from now on and they use Prime to virtually travel. They go to the National Mall, but Ada points out that “It’s wonderful, but… it’s just not the same. There’s no wind. There’s no heat from the sun. There aren’t any people. It feels empty.” This really stood out to me because it’s almost as if Ada yearns for more tangible and human experiences than Alex does.
Alex and Ada then go over to Alex’s grandmother’s house to visit. Alex’s grandmother has an android of her own named Daniel, and she’s the one who bought Ada for Alex. Over dinner, the way that Ada looks at Daniel is rather suspicious. I’m wondering if they have a special connection since they’re androids and if it will interfere with their relationships with Alex and his grandmother. There are a few other things that will prove to be very important to the last few issues of this series. If you’ve been following the series, you’ve got to pick this one up.
I liked the few changes of setting-although that might not seem like much in other books, this one focuses a lot on Alex and Ada at their house, so it almost feels as if you’ve been cooped up in there with them. That part could be a good or bad thing depending on how you see the book, but things are really starting to heat up and I can’t wait to see how the rest of the story unfolds.
