The Baltimore series takes place around World War I and features a hero renown for fighting monsters. As a period piece, the book features an alluring, unique story set against an uncommon background. The only drawback to this book comes from its publication in installments; I wish it would get a more consistent print run. Lord Baltimore makes his way to Budapest to confront the vampire Haigus. Picking up and alluding to previous installments right at the start, the issue shows our hero getting closer to his goal.

At night, Baltimore investigates vampires on the streets. He comes across a train that produces fire but no smoke. Realizing dark forces at work, Baltimore goes full swing into grappling with the heinous creatures he’s fated to battle.

The backdrop of World War I Europe and the masking of the undead as plague proves a masterful stroke of storytelling that makes this book a must read.

Yes, the art does seem to have the simple Mignola lines and forms, but it suffices for the purpose of the story. And what a story this is. The secret of the Infernal Train will have readers cheering and fearing for Baltimore and his quest.
