Review: Delia Awesome #1
Okay, here goes. It didn’t have a well-known writer attached to it. It didn’t have a well-known artist attached to it either. It didn’t even have a well-known publisher attached to it, but Delia Awesome might very well eventually have some incredibly loyal fans attached to it. Michael Schneider brings us a story about loss, doubt, fear and complete and utter happenstance. I know that there is a fan base out there somewhere for this type of story. I don’t have a whole lot to say, but I hope that this short review will encourage you to track this book down and give it a chance.
Delia has a dead-end job. Her life up to this point has been incredibly unsatisfying. It’s not all bad, however. There are good things happening to her boyfriend. So now she has resentment as well. But when he leaves her, she’s forced to deal with the negativity in her life with no buffer zone. She doesn’t take it very well and retreats deeper inside herself. When the time comes for her to attempt to move on and continue her life, she realizes that all her friends were his friends and her absence hasn’t been noticed at all. Everything changes when an alien spacecraft just happens to land smack dab in the middle of her walk home one night. After deciding to run away and leave this situation to professionals, we find out that the life form inside the ship has different plans for her.
Now I could go on and on about how good the art is or how impressed I was with the writing style (which tends to be what I’ve done so far), but I’m not going to do that. Instead, I’m going to tell you that by the time I got to the end of this book, I found myself wanting to read more. That is what comic books are all about. In all honesty, I could’ve done with a little less dialogue. The thing that works about this book so far is Michael’s ability to create a situation where I wanted to find out what the hell is going on. I don’t think that more dialogue is going to help that in this particular case.
Overall, I enjoyed it. It didn’t blow my skirt up or change the way that I read graphic fiction, but I do see the potential. Nice job, Michael. I look forward to seeing what’s in store for Delia.
