Review: Grimm Fairy Tales #101

Issue101 of Grimm Fairy Tales takes us on a whole new adventure but welcomes back the familiar faces of Belinda and Sela. However, they have a bit of a different role this time around. Sela and Belinda are now professors at Arcane Acre where they will help students with potentially powerful gifts. One of these students being Sela’s once estranged daughter, Skye. Usually bringing estranged kids or just children in general into series later on is one of my pet peeves, like do you remember Dawn from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and yea she was one of the most annoying characters ever. Anyway usually, just not a big fan of it but this time I’m actually kind of excited to see how things go in this arc. I think Skye and Sela will have a lot to hash out and I’m just feeding off the potential drama. GFT101_coverAIssue 101 doesn’t go too in depth in each character or their abilities, but so far we only have a few students; about five. And all I could think of was how this reminded me of X-Men and laughed when Skye actually made the same comment. I liked the humor thrown in there. Oh and I think some of the students are already up to no good. One of the students, Ali seems like he is going a little mad from his magic lamp. This obviously is just setting up for a genie in the bottle/ Aladdin fairytale. There was a little pang of bittersweet nostalgia reading this issue because all I could think of was Robin Williams as Genie.

As always Grimm Fairy Tales seems to end too soon and I’m left craving more of the captivating magic that Grimm does so well. I’m excited to see how the students will turn out; ya know to see if there’s one that goes rogue. Oh and I’m anxious to see all the different worlds and of course there is going to be some crazy dark evil that’s going to try to fuck everything up, so there’s that to look forward to.

As problematic as the art is, I still think that it has a lot of merit. Like shit dude Andrea Meloni has so much talent. Oh and the variant covers are looking pretty nice too. Sela is always looking like a perfect picture of badass.
