Review: Half Past Danger #5
Called it! I can’t tell you what I called, but when you figure it out for yourself… you’ll know. Now calling something in a comic this good, doesn’t meant that I didn’t enjoy the plot twist. Quite the opposite really, I enjoyed it more because it gave me that geeky satisfaction of being right there with the creator on the story. I would have done the same in their shoes which is why it’s fun to be “right.” That said it’s been a while since we checked in with this series. I fell behind on it and then never was able to catch up in the form of a review until now. Well John’s not dead and that’s kind of a miracle considering how badly the dude is injured. Irish wakes up with a T-Rex knocked out right before his eyes. He’s equally surprised to see John alive as the reader is. They regroup minus Moss and look at the ship and submarines getting away leaving them stranded on the island. One of the subs doubles back and they think they’re screwed, but then out pops Agent Moss to save the day. They board the ship and though they question how she learned to drive a U-Boat, they kind of drop it quickly because the other sub begins to attack them.
Moss begins heading right at them since both boats only have two torpedo bays and essentially only two shots before one of them is dead. She pulls a crazy maneuver and they manage to destroy the sub, but now they’re stuck on a course heading to the bottom of the ocean. John runs to the back of the sub and corrects the course with brute force, but injures himself even more in the process.
There are little cues in the story to pick up on and I’m sure some fans will call B.S. after the reveal, but you have to consider that Toht has controlled everything. There is more than one prize that the Nazi’s are after and really he’s a crazy Nazi that loves a challenge. All in all I would say everything that unfolds in the issue is very smart and consistent with the story thus far.
One of the things that drew me into this comic in the first place was the art. Mooney has a fantastic style and is able to present something that matches the era in which the story takes place, but also remain modern. The character designs are great and give a true sense to the characters. Other than the grunts, each character has a very realistic and unique look which makes this series stand out compared to other warish stories. I could have handled more Dinosaurs personally, but hey it was a really good issue.
With only one issue left I’ll definitely be back for it. If you missed out on this series, which is possible because I haven’t seen a lot of marketing for it since its release, then check it out. Sure you might have to wait for a trade at this point, but if you can get back issues then go for it. If you want instant gratification then check it out in a digital storefront as well. I really dug this series and regret not talking about it each month, but I’m also glad that I stuck with it.
