Review: Morning Glories #32

Review by: Kevin Reilly Nick Spencer and Joe Eisma’s acclaimed Morning Glories continues this week with issue thirty-two-- if you’re counting, the seventh of ‘season two’. For the past couple of years, Spencer has been praised to high heaven for this excellent series and it doesn’t appear that the buck, so to speak, will stop here. I don’t want to spoil the book for any rabid fans, but it’s safe to say that this is not a good first issue to dive into. If you’re not intimately familiar with the students and faculty of Morning Glories Academy, I recommend going back and picking up the trades before getting this (excellent) issue.

Complementing Spencer’s excellent writing, as always, is Joe Eisma’s art. Eisma has a really sort-of soft style that complements the writing in a really nice way. There are a few moments in the book which are shared by only two characters. The moment is so intense that the background of the scene is “shut out” so to speak, so that all in the frame is the two characters against a black background. It gives the scene a really intimate and fantastic uniqueness that proves Eisma’s undoubted skill.

All in all, like I said, it’s a fantastic issue in the middle of an arc-- if you haven’t been following this excellent series, the collections are as up to date as you can get, and I’d highly recommend them. Morning Glories is not to be missed.
