So clearly I was pretty stoked after our last issue. Robyn and Red Riding Hood met up again to show us some awesome moves, banter about love lives, and of course take down some evil villains. But just when you think these two are getting along and couldn’t possibly end up in a fight like their last meeting, the villains shove them into battle. Now it is time for #5 of Robyn Hood to give us the battle we have been hoping for. Of course the fight is all for show, but let’s be real...everything these girls do is for show. Ivory and her other monsters are still trying to take over, but before her plan can succeed, Red and Robyn must face off. The winner receives their life. Marian and her gal pal, Sam are trying to help the girls too. And that is where the issue first takes place. Even though we are waiting to see Red and Robyn, I love how each issue opens with some action. There's literally never a dull moment and starting each issue with a bang sets the tone of this whole series. Plus I love the new plot line with the monsters. I have to say that I don’t miss Myst as much as I thought I would. But Pat Shand incorporating the one thing that Robyn needed from Myst and that was a bit of magic.
Having the magic element still be apart of her every day duties allows for some of Myst to carry over but letting the series have their own light. Plus Marian’s character is all about some magic, and we wouldn’t want her to feel left out.
So we jump to the real fight happening between Red and Robyn. When I first met these two, I was in love with Robyn. She was far more edgy and entertaining, but man Red is looking good too. So now it is a toss up. Unfortunately, this is where the issue fell apart for me. There were two major things that I just couldn’t get over. 1. All the built up anticipation wasn’t worth the actual fight. The fight didn’t last long, and the winner is clear from the very beginning. I get that the two girls aren’t going to go all bat shit crazy, but still some sweet new moves could have been introduced. And 2. I missed Larry Watts. I didn’t realize how accustomed I was to his art, but during this whole issue I found myself yelling out loud, “no...no, that’s not right..” and so on. The girls looked too rugged and facial expressions were lacking. It just didn’t feel right. Also when Red transformed, she looked more monster than badass.
So hoping that Watts comes back soon, Robyn will definitely bounce back. And with some new character introductions, it looks like her time in New York could get way more interesting than her time in Myst. We still have a lot to explore though; Marian, their relationship, New York’s villains, and so on. I look forward to seeing this all unfold and pray that Red comes back for some better cameos.
