Review: The Field #4
I’ve given myself the impossible task of reviewing the final issue of The Field without spoiling it. I’m not sure how I’ll do that exactly, but let’s give it a shot. I can tell you that we open with a flashback from Grant’s past just before the loop begins. It’s an important scene and connects/reveals some aspects of the story that we’ve been exposed to, but never really understood.
Back in the present, Christian is carrying Grant as they run from the Trekkies and Bikers that are fighting. The Trekkies bring it hard and actually take out a few bikers. Grant and Christian make it out of the corn field and part ways. Christian lets him know that the day is about to reset so all Grant has to do is survive. Does he though? Meanwhile Christian rips off his shirt and prepares to battle the remaining Bikers.
That’s all I can say about the story… which is a damn shame because I really, really, really want to dissect this book. I just don’t think it’s fair to ruin it for anyone that might want to enjoy it. If you want to talk about it though hit up the comments below.
Ed Brisson delivers a wonderful conclusion to the story. Saying any more about the conclusion would also venture into spoiler territory, but I can say that everything he’s done with the series is intentional and has been feeding into this final issue. He sticks that damn landing.
Simon Roy delivers his second best issue. I still think that the second issue was his absolute best of the series, but overall his artwork and storytelling has been incredible. I swear you can hear a soundtrack while looking at the visuals. That’s how much atmosphere Roy adds to the story.
I’m going to bounce back to Brisson’s lettering and just give him the title of “best in the world” because his lettering is a huge aspect of this series. More creators and publisher need to take chances with lettering like Brisson’s because it could help so many stories.
This story is going to make for a great re-read now that it’s complete. It’s definitely been one of my favorite mini-series of the year and if you haven’t checked it out, don’t “trade wait.” Grab the DRM-Free issues from Image or better yet grab the back issues.
