Review: The Sixth Gun #40

Western stories can be quite enjoyable when everything pieces together so well.  It has to have the right mix of peril, adventure and character which The Sixth Gun has. I have a love for this book  as I get caught up in the story and would rather read it in trade form so I don't have to stop. The town of Brimstone has been destroyed again because of the six. Becky and Drake are fleeing for their life. Becky is also concerned about Nidawi because she has been injured in the battle.  Screaming Crow who uses Nidawi as a host convinces Becky to leave her and escape. Drake has a plan, he will lead Jesup and his posse away so Becky can escape.  Drake uses the four pistols to slow and distract Jesup. He can only slow Jesup because he possesses the pistol that can heal even from a fatal wound. I would say its high noon for Drake and Jesup but its night. So far the plan is working and Drake has led the posse his way, but Jesup gets the jump and him. Upon falling to the ground after getting shot Drake loses the fourth pistol that summons those it has slain and now Drake has to fight off an army of the dead with his good friend among them. All hope for Drake is lost until Becky comes back.

The Sixth Gun #40 copy 1There is no disappointment in this issue as the characters play off each other well. The clash between good and evil is clear but some character fall in the gray area. Drake happens to be that character. The story is building to a good climax and exciting ending. What is helping with that is the loss of hope for Becky and Drake, and Jesup’s rise to power. I have just fallen in love with the adventure of this book. It really is  page turner.

I also enjoy the art. The coloring sets the mood the action moves from panel to panel. The scene that was phenomenal is when Jesup comes back to life after the canon blast.

This book is a great western adventure. I would pick this up even if it is nearing the end of the arc. It’s just a great sense of story and art combined.
